Description

Harwood Lodge is a house, now divided into two separate residences, dating back to the 17th century. It was extended in 1756, as evidenced by a dated keystone, and further altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and a stone slate roof.

The house is two storeys high, originally with seven bays, though the first, second, fifth, and seventh bays are later additions. The first two bays feature a cornice and balustrade, along with quoins. Bays three to seven have single-chamfered-mullioned windows with drip moulds; the ground floor windows are predominantly of three lights, with the fourth bay having a five-light window and the sixth a French window. The first floor windows are two-light, set within gabled half-dormers with plain bargeboards. The projecting two-storey gabled porch includes a three-light window above which is a sundial. Most windows, except those in the porch, are likely 19th century. The first two bays have windows with gauged brick flat arches, some with keys, including one on the canted bay that is inscribed "L/R E/1756". Most of these windows are sash windows, with glazing bars to the first floor. The left return features a rusticated stone porch with an elliptical-arched opening and a pedimented doorcase, surmounted by a fanlight with glazing bars. To the left of the porch is a two-storey bowed bay with a balustrade. The property has three chimney stacks, each with diagonal shafts.

It is recorded that this was the home of the parents of the first Lord Leverhulme from 1873 to 1893, and it is said that plans and experiments for Sunlight soap manufacture were conducted at the property.
