Description

The Mews Number 2: The Mansion is a building that dates back to around 1830 and is currently used as a hotel. It is constructed of ashlar and features an asymmetrical plan with two storeys and three main parallel ranges. The entrance front includes a central gabled wing and a single-storey porch at the angle of the wing.

On the entrance front, the central gable showcases a 4-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, which has foiled lights and stained glass. Above this, there is a 3-light mullioned and transomed oriel window. A 2-light wood mullioned window with Gothic arched lights and margin lights is positioned over the porch. The porch itself features a Gothic arched entrance with a traceried overlight that also contains stained glass. Brass plates flanking the doorway indicate its former name, 'The Halliwell Lodge Hotel'. To the left of the central gable, there is an arched window with margin lights.

The garden front has two principal gables and two additional gables that may be from a later phase. The wide gabled return of the entrance front includes a canted bay window on the ground floor with an embattled parapet, and above it, there is a 3-light mullioned and transomed sash window. The gables are adorned with cusped bargeboards, and the further gables feature paired sash windows on the ground floor and an oriel window above. There are also single-storey service buildings at the ground floor level.

The eastern return elevation has three stepped gables, with a shallow rectangular bay window in the wide gable of the entrance range and a storey porch at the angle with the rear range. The two rear ranges may be from a slightly later phase and exhibit simpler detailing. The building has various axial stacks, some of which are octagonal.

Inside, the property retains a polychrome tiled floor in the entrance hall and an original staircase with cusped cast-iron rails.
