Description
This is a canal milestone dating from 1797, which was repositioned around 1890, for the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. It is made of buff sandstone and stands approximately half a metre high, set into the ground to the south of the towpath. The milestone has a rectangular cross-section with a flat top. The front (north) face is dressed, while the other faces are rough-hewn. The front is inscribed with ‘M/ 8’ (indicating the distance from Manchester) in deeply-incised, serifed lettering.
