Description
14 and 16 Wood Street are a pair of houses, now used as offices, that date back to around 1790 and are part of a longer terrace that includes Nos. 18 and 20 Wood Street. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a slate roof with a slate-hung gable.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a five-window range. There are outer doorways and a central passage entry. The left-hand doorway has a renewed pedimented case, while the right-hand door retains its original pedimented case with engaged shafts and a modillion cornice. Above the right-hand door is a traceried fanlight, likely made of wrought iron. To the left of this door is a four-pane sash window, and No. 16 has a canted bay window on the ground floor. The first-floor windows of No. 16 have been renewed in their original openings, but the upper storey retains 12-pane sashes. No. 14 features four-pane sash windows throughout. All windows have flat arched brick heads and painted stone sills. The moulded eaves cornice is original with fluted decoration surviving on No. 16, while it has been renewed on No. 14. Both buildings have end wall stacks.
The interior has not been inspected. Notably, No. 16 was the birthplace of William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, in 1851.
