Description

The Old Man and Scythe Public House is a public house and shop located on Churchgate in Bolton. It is believed to have been rebuilt in 1636, although much of its current appearance is the result of an early 20th-century remodelling. The building features mock timber cladding over a genuine timber frame, which is partially visible at the rear, and has a slate roof.

The exterior consists of two storeys with a four-window range, flanked by gabled wings on each side and a central main range. The right-hand gable has full-height canted bay windows, while the left-hand gable features a canted oriel window with a doorway beside it and a 2-light mullioned and transomed window above. The central range includes a round-arched doorway on the right and another doorway with a 3-light window beneath a continuous fascia on the left. There is also a segmentally arched entry to a yard on the left side, with two 2-light casement windows above. The applied framing and leaded windows appear to date from the early 20th-century remodelling, while the doorway and the small shop front with door and window in the central range seem to be from the early 19th century. The canted bay windows in the right-hand gable also predate the remodelling. Ornamental heads are present on the rainwater goods, and there is a side wall stack in the right-hand wing and an axial stack to the left.

Inside, the building retains elements of an early plan with a division into small rooms and includes some fitted bar furniture.
