Description
A pair of cottages, likely originating as a single dwelling in the 17th century or earlier, are located on Pepper Street in Appleton. The cottages are constructed with an oak frame encased in brick-nogged rectangular panels, featuring one intermediate rail and some diagonal braces. A projecting sandstone plinth supports a thatched roof, with a chimney running along the ridge towards the right centre and a single-flue chimney on the left gable. The cottages are one storey high with attic bedrooms within the roof space, comprising five bays overall. The wooden casement windows have been replaced and altered, and the doors are boarded. Laurel Cottage, on the left, has a small, gabled porch from the early 20th century. A full-length lean-to extends from the rear.
Inside Laurel Cottage, there’s an ingle nook at the right end. Notable features include chamfered oak beams and exposed timber framing within the internal walls. An ogee arched oak lintel spans the opening between the parlour and kitchen. Large oak purlins are also present. Originally, the building was likely a single dwelling with a lobby entrance opposite the ridge chimney and two back-to-back ingle nooks.
