Description
The Church of St Cross is a church built in 1886 by Edmund Kirby, funded by Piers Egerton Warburton of Arley. It is constructed from red sandstone and features a red tile roof, with an oak-framed north porch set on a sandstone plinth. The church has a cruciform shape, with a two-stage tower above the crossing, low hip-roofed transepts, a three-window aisleless nave, and a one-window chancel. A baptistry, designed as a canted bay window, projects from the west end. Notable windows include a rose window above the baptistry, a geometrical east window, and straight-headed reticulated windows on the north and south sides of the nave and chancel.
Inside, the nave and chancel have a cradle roof, and the crossing arches feature continuous mouldings without capitals. An organ is located in the north transept, and the east window contains glass from 1870. There is also a stone pulpit. Pevsner and Hubbard remarked that the church is "better than one expects him [Edmund Kirby] to be."
