Description

Oughtrington Hall, now part of Lymm Grammar School, dates from around 1830. It features rendered walls and a hipped grey slate roof. The central section has a canted design with an unfluted Greek Doric portico, which includes paired inner columns and single corner columns, along with three windows above. Each wing has one window. The lower windows are set in segmental-arched recesses and consist of three sashes (a: b: a) divided by pilasters, with additional pilasters in the reveals. The upper storey has plain recessed sashes, all of which have two panes. There is a glazed porch in the portico, likely added in the late 19th century. The building has two undersized ridge chimneys that are symmetrically placed.

Inside, the hall features a marble mantel with two cornucopiae and a shouldered architrave. The staff room on the right has a heavily moulded plaster cornice and a marble mantel. The front and rear libraries on the left have moulded plaster ceilings with geometrical panels and a folding partition in a moulded case topped with a square pediment. The front library includes a notable marble fireplace, possibly attributed to Robert Adam, while the rear library has a Gothick glazed bookcase above a low range of cupboards. An open well staircase located behind the hall has two flights with oak steps, an acanthus-decorated open string, two barley sugar balusters and one fluted baluster per step, and a mahogany rail with a curtail and a rectangular glazed lantern above.
