Description

The General Post Office, dated 1906, is built of red brick with stone dressings. It presents a symmetrical front of three storeys. The central section features large windows with stone mullions and transoms, and dentilled sills. This is flanked by tower-like blocks containing narrow windows and topped with circular windows and a parapet. The entrance is located in the left-hand tower, featuring a dated lintel. The wings have two windows on each floor; the ground-floor windows have segmental arched heads. Additional tower blocks are situated on either end. A large modillioned eaves cornice runs above the first floor, and the top floor includes dormers set into a stone balustrade and topped with a mansard roof. The right-hand side, facing Palmyra Square North, has two bays and flanking towers. This building is of group value, contributing to the character of the area.
