Description
The Technical School, built between 1900 and 1902 by William and Segar Owen, is a Grade II listed building located on the south side of Palmyra Square. It is constructed of red brick and features two high storeys. The central portion of the building is made of stone and includes a large entrance accessed by steps, topped with a hood and blocked paired columns, which support a large curved pediment. An iron balcony is situated above the entrance window. On each side of the entrance, there are five windows on both floors, as well as additional windows in the semi-basement behind area steps. Below the upper windows, terracotta relief panels display the names of notable historical scientists.
Inside, the hall boasts a mosaic floor depicting the signs of the zodiac, elaborately carved doorways, glass features, a moulded frieze, and iron balusters on the stairs. The Technical School is part of a group of listed buildings in Palmyra Square, which includes Nos 9 to 21 (odd), the Museum and Art Gallery on Bold Street, No 10 Egypt Street, Nos 3 to 13 (odd) on Springfield Street, and Nos 13 and 15 on Suez Street.
