Description

The Museum and Art Gallery was built between 1855 and 1857 by John Dobson of Newcastle. It is constructed of red brick and stone and has two storeys. The building features a top cornice supported by modillions, with quoins and a band. The central section projects forward and includes an entrance flanked by Tuscan pilasters, along with two tripartite windows on each side, each topped with cornices. Above the entrance are five blank stone panels instead of windows, with the center panel carved with "museum and library." The facade facing Museum Street has a simpler entrance in the center, five windows, and eight panels, of which three bays are original and the rest were added later in a similar style. Inside, there is an iron staircase. The Museum and Art Gallery is part of a group of listed buildings that includes Nos 12, 9 to 21 (odd), No 10 Egypt Street, all the listed buildings in Palmyra Square, Nos 3 to 13 (odd) Springfield Street, and Nos 13 and 15 Suez Street.
