Description
The Burford Lane Aqueduct is an aqueduct that carries the Bridgewater Canal over Burford Lane, built around 1770 by James Brindley. It is constructed from red brick and sandstone. The aqueduct features a deep segmental arch that curves down towards the center beneath the canal, with curved faces and abutments. The northern abutment is made of tooled sandstone, while the southern side is brick, with stone springers and a backing band for the arch. Above the arch, there is a straight band. The side walls under the archway have a curved batter and are reinforced by 20th-century flush bands of concrete. On the north bank of the canal, there is a curved parapet for the towpath. Additionally, there is a raised footpath under the archway on the east side, which has a brick side and stone paving.
