Description
Burford Lane Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1866 by John Douglas, likely for R.E. Egerton-Warburton. It features a combination of brown brick and oak framing with rendered panels, topped by a grey slate roof. The roof has a cross-gable on the right and a projecting wing on the left, with a diminishing chimney on the face of the cross-gable, a lateral chimney on the left, and one ridge chimney, all shaped. The building has two full storeys, with attics in the front gable on the left and the cross-gable, both of which are oak-framed.
On the left side, there is a 4-light mullioned and transomed window for the parlour, above which is a 4-light bedroom window and a small 3-light window in the attic, all framed in the gable. The boarded door features glazed shouldered top panels and parallel braces, sheltered by a lean-to porch supported by shaped brackets. To the right of the door, there is a single-light window, a small single-light window, and a 3-light mullioned window above. The cross-gable has a tall wood casement window on the lower storey and small framed casement windows on brackets to the upper storey, positioned on either side of the chimney. The right end of the farmhouse includes a 5-light mullioned and transomed window on the lower storey and a 3-light mullioned window on the upper storey. All the mullioned windows are leaded. This farmhouse is recognized as one of the earliest identified works by Douglas and reflects his developing neo-vernacular style. The interior has not been inspected.
