Description
No. 14 Church End is a late 17th-century cottage that was originally timber framed but is now constructed from lime-washed bricks dating to the 18th century. It features a thatched roof and plain brick stacks. The cottage is three bays wide, single storey with an attic, and has a gable facing the road. It includes three two-light small-paned horizontal sliding sash windows and a panelled front door.
Inside, there is an exposed sandstone fireplace wall, cruck trusses, oak wall plates with mortices and trenail holes, bevelled beams, and heavy floor joists. The interior also has a sleeping loft with simple ladder access, bevelled purlins, and early rafters.
Historically, this building is reputed to be the birthplace of John Middleton, known as the 'Childe of Hale,' who was said to have grown overnight into a giant measuring nine feet, three inches tall.
