Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1754, featuring a 14th-century west tower. The church is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof, with a rectangular plan consisting of five bays. The square tower includes corner buttresses and crenellations. There is a boarded oak door set in a gothic opening, complete with a drip mould and a simple geometrical window above. The bell stage has curvilinear louvre windows on all sides. The body of the church has round-headed windows with springing blocks and keystones, fitted with leaded light glazing, while the chancel gable window is Venetian in style and glazed in large squares.
Inside, there is a Georgian west gallery supported by two Tuscan stone columns. The original open timber roof, which was destroyed by fire in 1977, has been replaced with a close boarded polished chestnut roof, divided into panels by cross beams and featuring large timber side coves.
