Description

The Cottage is an early 17th-century cottage that incorporates internal features potentially dating to the 16th century or earlier. The front is pebbledashed, reportedly over an oak frame with a sandstone plinth, and has a thatched roof with a slate catslide roof to the rear outshut. A 19th-century brick rear wing has a roof of small slates. The front features a cross-gabled right wing with two windows, a 20th-century timber and glass porch, and a gabled dormer with a three-light window, which was formerly leaded, with the central light set lower than the side lights. A brick ridge chimney is located immediately to the left of the doorway; a flush chimney is on the left gable, both being of brick.

Inside, there is a baffle entrance leading to an inglenook. The inglenook has been altered and is positioned against the left gable, with a tapered oak bressumer above. Chamfered oak beams are visible, and a stair has replaced an earlier feature behind the inglenook. Upstairs, moulded arched beams are present, one with arch braces and damage, featuring roses with raised fleur-de-lys on each face, suggesting a 16th-century open hall converted to two stories in the early 17th century. Large timbers form a partition wall. Some wattle and daub construction is also present. In the right gable, a moulded cambered tie beam and parts of moulded posts remain. The roof beams are of particular interest, indicating a well-finished open hall in a dwelling of modest size.
