Description
The viaduct over Weaver Navigation, known as Number 54, was built between 1848 and 1850. It was designed by engineer Alexander Rendel and constructed by contractor Thomas Brassey for the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Junction Railway Company. The structure is made of brown brick and cast iron, featuring a segmental-arched cast iron span that measures approximately 25 meters and stands about 28 meters above the water level of the navigation. On each side, there is a lower round brick arch topped with a doubly-recessed rectangular panel. The viaduct has square abutments and four rectangular buttresses on each face. It includes moulded cornices, moulded stone imposts at the central span, and moulded copings. A reinforced concrete tract-bed has been added above the cast iron arch, which somewhat detracts from the overall appearance of this otherwise handsome and symmetrical viaduct.
