Description
Frodsham Viaduct, Number 53, is a railway viaduct built between 1848 and 1850, designed by engineer A Rendel and constructed by contractor Thomas Brassey for the Birkenhead, Lancashire & Cheshire Junction Railway Company. The structure is made of red sandstone, brown brick, and cast iron. It features two segmental-arched iron spans, each approximately 30 meters long, crossing the River Weaver. On the west bank, there are two round arches, while the east bank has 21 arches. The piers supporting the iron spans are made of rusticated tooled ashlar, while the other spans consist of rusticated voussoirs, pier faces, quoins, and rock-faced spandrels with brick reveals. The piers of the iron spans have a cornice, while the other piers have simpler imposts. The top of the central pier over the river has been modified to support a mid-20th century concrete track bed.
