Description

The Village Well is a structure dating from around 1800, although it has earlier origins and has undergone later alterations. It consists of a red sandstone cave-like chamber that is set into a wall at the level of the Lower Lane carriageway. The well features a flat stone threshold slab, and it is currently protected by a door, as it was last used in 1940. Due to the slope of Lower Lane, the well chamber is situated below the level of the village green and Eaton Road. It is located to the east of the village stocks and smithy, placing it in a central position within the village.
