Description
The entrance to army premises adjoining No. 52 Main Street is a mid-19th century barrack entrance made of rock-faced red sandstone. It features a segmental arch gateway that is 3 metres high and 3 metres wide. The keystone displays the Crown and the Prince of Wales feathers along with the motto "ICH DIEN." Above the arch, the inscription "L COMPANY" is carved into the stone, while the voussoirs are marked with "2nd EC VB CR," indicating "E COMPANY: V BATTALION: CHESHIRE REGIMENT." The rectangular wing walls, which include a pedestrian door on the left, are adorned with a Cheshire sheaf between two mock loopholes at a high level on each side of the gateway. The structure is topped with a crenellated parapet. This entrance is included for its group value.
