Description
Nos. 85 and 89 on Main Street are two cottages that were originally three, dating back to the 17th century. They are built from irregular English garden wall bond brown brick, resting on a weathered red sandstone plinth, and feature thatched roofs, with the roof of No. 85 being lower than that of No. 89, which incorporates the former No. 87. The doors have been replaced, and there are replaced small-pane casements on the lower storey, including one restored leaded casement, as well as on the upper storey of No. 85. No. 89 has two dormers with 17th-century oak frames and small casements, while the rear of No. 89 shows oak small framing. The chimneys have been removed above roof level.
Inside No. 89, there is a lobby entrance and an inglenook with a sandstone baffle and oak bressumer. The 17th-century stair has been altered, and the oak-frame wall between No. 89 and the former No. 87 features quite large square panels. The complete roof structure includes diagonal windbraces, purlins, and unwrought rafters, all made of oak. Additionally, there is a corner chimney-breast in the end wall at the front corner of the parlour of the former No. 87. No. 85 has similar framing but is more altered.
