Description
Tidestone is a mid to late 19th century sandstone pillar, built to mark the limit of an extreme high tide that occurred in 1862. Made from red sandstone, the pillar is shaped like a headstone and stands about 50 centimeters above the ground, with its base buried underground. It has a rectangular section with a rounded top. The front of the stone faces southeast and features an ashlar surface that is inscribed in a serif font, reading: THE TIDE / CAME TO / THIS STONE / JANUARY / 20, 1862. The rear and sides of the stone are blank, and the rear edges are rounded.
