Description

The Lloyds TSB Bank in Frodsham, originally Frodsham Town’s Office, was built in 1852. It is constructed of red-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a low-pitched grey slate hipped roof. The building is two storeys high and has five windows. The design incorporates Italianate detailing.

The lower level features a plinth, a cill band, and a frieze and cornice at first-floor level. A further cill band, frieze and cornice, adorned with shaped brackets, sit at the eaves of the upper storey. The original double doors have been replaced but are contained within a substantial, moulded door case featuring a pediment supported by ornate consoles. The ground-floor windows are 9-pane recessed sashes beneath wedge lintels. The upper-floor windows are tall 12-pane sashes with shouldered and eared architraves and cornices resting on consoles. Two symmetrically placed chimneys are present, each with recessed stucco panels on the front elevation.

A record from the Cheshire Record Office (PC 43/1, September 30 1852) indicates that the Town’s Office was rented for ten pounds ten shillings, including coal and cleaning.
