Description

The Church of St Peter, built in 1817 by architect James Gunnery for the Freemasons, is located on Chester Road in Delamere. It has undergone significant alterations in 1878 and features a vestry added in 1915. The church is constructed from buff Manley sandstone with a Welsh slate roof and is designed in the Decorated style.

The structure includes a 2-bay nave, a south aisle, short transepts, a 1-bay chancel, and a south porch attached to the west tower. The gabled porch features a broadly moulded 2-centred arched entrance supported by colonettes. The nave has rectangular windows with three lights and trefoil-headed lights. The transept is supported by diagonal buttresses and has a three-light window with reticulated tracery and a label mould, along with a two-light rectangular window featuring similar tracery. The east side of the church has a four-light window, while the north side retains a window with Y-tracery from the original building.

The small tower has diagonal buttresses and simple bands at each stage, with plain, chamfered two-light windows and lancets. It is topped with an embattled parapet adorned with gargoyles and a pyramidal cap.

Inside, there is an internal porch and an area beneath the tower. A brass plaque beneath the west window commemorates the laying of the foundation stone and the architect's name. The short nave features a tower arch at the west end, flanked by doorways with Caernarvon arches. The south aisle has a two-bay arcade supported by plain columns, and the wide chancel includes two pierced Gothic arch-braced trusses.
