Description
The gates, railings, and gatepiers at Sandy Brow date from different periods, featuring a small gate from the early 18th century, late 19th-century gatepiers, and large gates and railings added between 1905 and 1925 for Lord Wavertree. The structure is made of wrought iron. The central small gate has plain bars and is flanked by panels of gilded scrollwork, supported by later scrolled brackets. The overthrow includes gilded finials and scrollwork, featuring a central monogram "TDM" in copperplate for symmetry. Attached to the rear is a bell in a similarly styled framework. On either side, there are railings of plain bars separated by scrollwork panels, set on a low stone-coped brick wall. To the left, a pair of gatepiers with plain brick bodies, moulded limestone capstones, and ball finials support a pair of gates with scrollwork panels, a lock rail, and an overthrow adorned with scrolls and gilded leaves. The origin of the original gate is uncertain, but Oulton Park and Hoseley Hall in Marford are potential sources.
