Description
The Great Barrow War Memorial is a sandstone structure located within the churchyard of St Bartholomew’s Church. It features a Celtic-style wheel-head cross that stands approximately 4 meters tall. The cross has interlace detailing in relief on both sides, including a central leaf motif, and is mounted on an angular, tapered shaft. The shaft includes five additional leaf motifs in relief, evenly spaced along its length.
The shaft rests on a square plinth with angular, pillared shoulders at each corner. This plinth displays bronze plaques on three sides—north, south, and west—with inscriptions in relief. The general inscription on the south-facing side of the plinth reads: "TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD / & TO COMMEMORATE THE SELF / SACRIFICE & DEVOTION OF THE / BRAVE SONS OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO DIED FIGHTING FOR ENGLAND / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The names and ranks of 21 men who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the north-facing side.
Additionally, a third bronze plaque on the west-facing side bears the inscription "AND ALSO OF" followed by the names of three men who served in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. The plinth is set upon a two-stepped octagonal base.
