Description

41 and 43 Hamilton Street are a pair of suburban houses built around 1850. They are made of Flemish bond brown brick with stone dressings and feature a hipped grey slate roof. The houses are two storeys tall and double-fronted, with a plinth and flush quoins at the corners. Each house has a projecting two-storey central porch made of yellow sandstone, which includes a simple round-arched projecting doorcase with a cornice. The doors are four-panelled, with the door to No. 41 being fielded.

The houses have repaired cross-windows with moulded stone sills and wedge lintels, while the ground floor windows have gently cambered soffits. Each house has one window on either side of the porch on both storeys and one above each doorway, all topped with stone pediments. The chimneys are plinthed, with the central chimney featuring four pairs of divided flues, and each end chimney having two pairs of flues. Each house also has a square hip-roofed projecting bay on the flank wall. The rears and interiors of the houses were not inspected.

Historically, the development plan for this land was created in 1847 by C. Rampling of Liverpool, which originally proposed detached and semi-detached villas in substantial gardens. However, the density of the development increased, and these houses, along with Nos. 15 & 17, 19 & 21, 23 & 25, and 27 & 29 Hamilton Street, reflect the architectural styles suggested in Rampling's birdseye sketches.
