Description
The Lodge is a gate lodge to Vale Royal Abbey, built around 1870. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and features a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and a cross-shaped plan. The entrance front has a projecting central gable with an arched doorway that has a chamfered reveal. Above the doorway is a 4-light casement window with chamfered mullions and surround. The eaves are supported by timber brackets, and the roof displays alternating plain and fishscale tiles.
To the left of the entrance front, there is a large 20th-century addition. On the right-hand side, there is a central projecting gabled wing that includes a canted bay window on the ground floor, which features two stone-surrounded mullioned windows in the center and at the angles. Flanking this bay window are cross windows at ground floor level, and a 4-light casement window with a chamfered surround is located in the gable. The building is topped with two massive brick chimney stacks positioned on either side of the ridge.
