Description

Hulme Hall is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 15th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brown brick and has a roof made of stone slate and Welsh slate. The building has two storeys and an attic, with an asymmetrical plan. The entrance front, facing northeast, has three gabled bays, while the garden front, facing northwest, consists of five bays, with the two southwest bays set back in two stages. The southeast section of the farmhouse, which appears to be the oldest, showcases 17th century style brickwork, complete with a projecting brick plinth and stone coping with kneelers. The windows are primarily 2-to-3-light casements featuring stone sills and cambered arches. The entrance door is ledged and battened, mounted on strap hinges, and there is a four-panel half-glazed door located in an added lean-to porch on the garden front. Gable-end stacks are present on the 17th century section, along with barge boards on the entrance front gables.

Inside, the entrance hall features a massive moulded spine beam that intersects with two deep cambered beams, one of which is moulded and the other plain, supported by a wall. The dining room and other rooms in the 17th century section have exposed beams, and there are ledged and battened doors on strap hinges throughout. The staircase includes splat balusters, and there are 17th century style doors on the first floor. Some original roof timbers can be seen in the attic. The house is surrounded by a moat.
