Description
The lychgate to St. Michael's Churchyard, dated 1882, features open timber framing and a hipped roof made of Lakeland slate. It has a chamfered stone base that supports heavy timber posts with curving cross bracing. The bressumer, which is also dated 1882, has an inscription in applique Gothick lettering on the rear that reads: "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE." The roof is supported by parallel rafters, and there are wooden gates with iron strap hinges and shaped splat balusters in the top panels. This structure is included for its group value.
