Description
The building is a former nurse's accommodation and dispensary, constructed in 1893 by Douglas and Fordham for the First Duke of Westminster. It consists of a handed pair of cottages and an attached dispensary. The structure is made of red brick with blue diapering on the dormer gables and the bases of the end gables, while the heads of the end gables are white rendered. The roof is covered with small grey-green slates, and there is a central chimney for the cottages with diagonal flues rising from the roof, as well as a tall plinthed chimney for the dispensary with two attached diagonal flues.
The front features two separated projecting dormer gables, flanked by front doors on the left and right. The cottages are one and a half storeys high with one window each, while the single-storey dispensary has two windows on the left. The cottages have iron casements (with leaded glazing removed) in mullioned windows made of moulded brick, featuring three camber-arched lights. The doors consist of two square panels of leaded glazing above three tall wooden panels. The dispensary, which includes an office, has two timber mullioned windows with arched top lights containing small panes.
This building serves as a terminal feature at the north end of the village and reflects the significant role the First Duke played in establishing the system of district nurses in Britain.
