Description
Nos. 1 (formerly Evelyn Cottage) and 2 Church Lane are a pair of cottages built in 1893 for the 1st Duke of Westminster, likely designed by Douglas and Fordham. They are constructed of red brick, with the upper storey featuring a blue diaper pattern, and have a grey-green slate roof with two shaped chimneys at the gables. This asymmetrical Jacobethan pair consists of 1½ storeys and one window each, serving as a terminal feature at the east end of Church Lane. The left cottage has a large front gable with shaped ends to the purlins and wallplates, while the right cottage features a corbelled, shaped gable to a half-dormer. The windows are iron casements (with leaded glazing removed) set in mullioned windows made of moulded brick, with camber arches between the mullions. The doors are located in the end walls.
