Description
Green Paddocks is a house built in 1872 by John Douglas for the 3rd Marquis of Westminster. It is constructed of brown brick with red tile roofs and features two storeys and attics, arranged in a three-bay layout. The central porch is two storeys high and has an arched doorway that contains a 12-panel shaped door. Above the door is a brick-mullioned leaded window with panelled brickwork, topped by a pargetted gable with shaped bargeboards. To either side of the porch, there are two-storey basket arched recessed panels that hold mullioned windows, which are surmounted by ornate brick dormers under shaped gables. The windows have round-arched heads and transoms on the ground floor.
Inside, there is a substantial dogleg stair made of softwood, featuring a shaped rail and turned balusters. The front rooms on the left and right have six-panel doors made of inlaid mahogany, which were brought in from a demolished Victorian hotel. Other panelled doors typical of Douglas's work have moulded rails and muntins. In the front room on the left, there is a fireplace with free-standing fluted columns supporting the mantel, although the overmantel has been removed. The coach house at the rear has been converted into a cottage but is not included in the listing.
