Description
Barton Well consists of a water-spout, shelter, and two troughs, likely dating from around 1782. The structure is made of stone, featuring rectangular troughs that are carved from large sandstone blocks. The back part of the troughs is covered with two large stone slabs, which are supported by three corbel-shaped vertical slabs, standing about 0.70 meters above the rims of the troughs. An iron spout directs water into the western trough. The troughs are oriented away from the road, and there is a stone retaining wall at the rear, which is positioned beneath the back of the pavement. This well was probably constructed when the road was turnpiked in 1782.
