Description
The wrought iron gates and screen, located approximately 15 metres west of the portal on Forest Road in Tarporley, date from the late 19th century. They feature double drive gates with wickets on either side, each topped with an overthrow. The entrance front includes central carriage gates that have rings on the dog rail and arrow-headed dog bars. The lock rail is adorned with round-ended rectangles and spikes above, while semi-circular panels above display radiating ogee shapes. The lateral panels are decorated with anthemia in oval frames, and similar designs are found on the piers, which also feature rose bosses on the sides and finials shaped like covered vases. The wicket gates on either side have comparable dog and lock rails, with low screens that include arrow-headed dog rails, terminating in obelisk-shaped spikes. This structure is included for its group value.
