Description
The Monks Well is a 19th-century eye catcher constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar, situated on the northern tip of a small quarry within the Arderne Hall Estate. It comprises a ruined wall incorporating an archway and a cross. A three-quarter circular cell, designed as a hermit's cell, has been carved into the quarry wall, featuring a cambered lintel above its doorway. To the cell's right is a water trough with a spout positioned above it. Above the quarry, a section of broken wall stands, including a buttress on the left and a pointed archway on the right. A cross, set on a two-step base—the upper step bearing 18th or early 19th-century schoolboy graffiti in the form of carved initials within boot soles—is located to the right of the pointed archway. The cross itself has chamfered edges and is inscribed "ST." on its southern side and "MCDXV" (referencing the Battle of Agincourt) on its northern face.
