Description

Rock Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, possibly built on an earlier structure, and is internally dated 1626. The building has seen little alteration over time. It features a brick exterior that was once limewashed, with timber framing and brick nogging at the rear. The roof is slate, and there are stone dressings and a plinth.

The farmhouse has two storeys and cellars, with a lobby entrance. The front facade has three windows on the first floor, one of which is located in a cross wing. The facade is now flush, with a recess at the ground floor that may indicate the original position of the front wall. The ground floor features three-light timber casements in rectangular openings beneath flush brick arches. The central ground floor window is recessed and has a timber lintel below a brick arch. A plain brick band at the first floor rises over the windows in the cross wing and central bay. The door is set back behind an opening with flush quoins, and similar quoins are found at the corners and at the angle of the recessed window bay. There are replaced brick stacks located at the rear of the cross wing and on the ridge behind the entrance.

Inside, the farmhouse has stop-chamfered and ovolo moulded beams. Above the fireplace in the cross wing is a moulded rectangular hood. The bressumer of the main inglenook is stop chamfered and supported on an outer pier with a chamfered pedestal. This panel is decorated with alternating raised circles and lozenges in raised moulding, and the cap bears an inscription in raised lettering: "1626 T[HOMAS] H[ATTON]." The rear inglenook bressumer is also stop chamfered.
