Description
The Church of St James is a Grade II* listed building, partly rebuilt in 1854 by Edward Hodkinson. It is constructed of red sandstone and features a nave, a north aisle, a chancel, and a south porch, all roofed in grey slate, along with a west tower. The chancel includes a 14th-century three-light east window with original simple tracery, and two 15th-century two-light square-headed windows on each side wall. The tower, built around 1485-1493 by Simon Ripley, was raised by two courses in 1854 and has diagonal buttresses, with two-light traceried windows in the upper storey and a blank niche in the west wall below. The nave (including the aisle) and porch were completely rebuilt in 1854 in the perpendicular style.
Inside, there is a 17th-century oak arch-braced collar roof in the chancel. The church houses bells dated 1622 and 1636, a late 17th-century altar rail with spiral turned balusters, a carved oak sanctuary chair from 1634, and an early 18th-century brass candelabrum in the chancel. The church also features 19th-century stained glass.
