Description
Crewe Hill and the attached cottage are a house and cottage, likely built around 1805 and extended around 1890. The exterior features a rendered finish with grey slate roofs and displays a mildly Gothic style. The building has two storeys and three windows. The main block is symmetrical, with a flush central gable and projecting wing gables connected by a verandah. The Gothic double doors are topped with a cross-casement window. The lower storey of the wings has late 20th-century square bay windows, with balconies in front of oak French windows leading to the bedrooms. An attached cottage forms a recessed lower wing on the right side.
Inside, the central full-height hall features richly carved oak doors on the left, right, and rear, which may date from the late 16th or 17th century. There is an open-string staircase on the right with winders and stick balusters, leading to a gallery with barley-sugar balusters supported by two richly carved posts over the front of the hall. The ceiling is made of Jacobethan oak. A dining room was added to the rear around 1890. The main interest of the building lies in the antiquarian design of the open hall.
