Description
This description covers a pair of adjacent table tombs located in the churchyard south of St Chad's Church and east of the path to the church porch. These tombs date from the early 18th century and are made of yellow sandstone. The inscriptions on the tombs are badly weathered, but the north tomb includes a date of death from 1726.
The west ends of both tombs feature recessed round-headed panels; the north tomb has an hourglass depicted, while the south tomb displays a skull and crossbones above the inscription "Mors S... Omnium." On the north side of the north tomb, there is a square central panel that contains an encircled quatrefoil in a lozenge shape, flanked by a vertical panel on the right and a decayed panel on the left. Each tomb's east end has a fielded panel, and the south side of the south tomb has three fielded panels set within bolection moulded borders.
