Description
The Farndon War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely dating from around 1920, constructed from limestone. It comprises a roughly 5-metre-high Celtic-style wheel-head cross, featuring carved interlace detailing. The cross sits atop a tapering, chamfered shaft, which is in turn set upon a rectangular plinth with a chamfered base on its east-facing side. The names of 18 men who died in the First World War are incised into this plinth. The plinth stands on a three-stepped rectangular base. An inscription on the top step reads "IN PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THESE / MEN WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY." The date "1914 + 1919" is inscribed below this on the second step. Later additions to the south facing side of the plinth record the names of five men who served in the Second World War, accompanied by the inscription "1939 + 1945" on the second step beneath.
