Description
Top Farm is a farmhouse, now converted to a shop and offices, dating from the mid 17th century. It is constructed of local brown brick on a projecting sandstone plinth, topped with grey slate roofs. The building features a recessed two-storey central section flanked by two cross-wings: the left wing has three storeys, while the right wing has two storeys, both of which have been altered. The wings are made of small bricks typical of the 17th century, arranged in an irregular bond, with plain projecting bands at the first floor level. The left cross-wing has shaped gables at both the front and rear, adorned with plain projecting brick cornices. The central portion has been recased in larger bricks laid in Flemish bond. Although doors and windows have been altered, some remain in their original openings: the left cross-wing features a two-light window with four-pane flush sashes on the lower storey and one 20th-century casement window on each storey above; the central section includes recessed porches at each corner with a three-light and eight-pane sash window between them, along with a four-pane sash on the upper storey; the right wing has similar sashes on both the lower and upper storeys. A shaped lateral chimney of brick, likely from the 17th century, is located on the left cross-wing.
Inside, there is an altered inglenook with a hood beam behind the left porch, a shaped oak handrail and splat balusters at the stair head in the left wing, and a framed partition with wattle and daub panels in the upper storey of the right wing; however, most of the interior has been altered.
