Description
The footpath guidepost, located 120 meters south of Axes Farmhouse, dates from the late 19th century. It is an octagonal cast-iron post featuring a plinth, a moulded cap, and a ball finial. The finger plate, which has nicked corners, displays a raised inscription that reads: "WIRRAL FOOTPATH ETC SOCIETY PUBLIC FOOTPATH TO WHITBY ROAD PLEASE KEEP TO PATH with BY PERMISSION OF THE COUNCIL."
The National Footpath Preservation Society, established in 1884 under the patronage of the Duke of Westminster and others, likely oversaw the erection of this guidepost and similar examples throughout the Wirral shortly thereafter.
