Description
This description covers a section of the medieval City Walls in Chester, dating from the late 11th century to the early 12th century. The walls were converted into a promenade between 1702 and 1708 and have undergone repairs at various times. They are constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble. The outer face of the wall is embanked, except for the northern part near the Watergate, where it displays 8 to 10 courses above the grass bank and approximately 18 courses, increasing to 25 courses further north. Renewed masonry in the wall face indicates a possible former turret opposite Black Friars. There are buttresses that were likely added later. A 19th-century projecting turret provides access to stairs leading to the racecourse. Additionally, there is a double embrasure, with openings divided by a rib wall, which may date from the 17th century, located immediately south of the Watergate. The masonry also suggests the position of the south tower of the Watergate. Much of the pavement that occupies the former wall walk is now level with the ground inside the wall.
