Description

This house, dating to around 1855, was converted into flats in the late 20th century with some alterations to the front and a later addition to the rear. The front elevation is lined with render over brickwork and has a hipped grey slate roof. The symmetrical Italianate design features a double-fronted west facade, originally the entrance to Nun's Road. A former central doorway has been glazed, with an overlight and a landing window placed above. Canted bay windows extend two stories high on either side, featuring nearly flush-horned sashes with four panes to the front and two panes to each canted face. A band runs above the second-story sill level, and the eaves are boxed and projecting. Rendered chimneys are present, one on the ridge and one set flush at each side. The interior was not inspected. A garden wall, built with English bond brown brick, runs along Nun’s Road and the south side of the garden. The wall is stone-capped and incorporates sandstone in the lower courses facing north, towards Black Friars. This wall is likely older than the house itself. The building is prominently situated above the City Wall, as viewed across the Roodee; the 20th-century extensions lack special interest.
