Description

The cenotaph to Matthew Henry, located on Grosvenor Street Roundabout, is a monument dating from 1860. It features a polished granite obelisk set on a square base with three sandstone steps. The obelisk is inscribed with the following text: "MATTHEW HENRY VDM BORN 18TH OCTOBER 1662 DIED 22ND JUNE 1714 INTERRED IN TRINITY CHURCH IN THIS CITY." Matthew Henry was a prominent divine and biblical commentator, born at Broad Oak Iscoyd, which was then in the parish of Malpas, Cheshire. He was ordained privately in London and began his ministry as a non-conformist in Chester in 1687, residing in Bollands Court, White Friars until 1712. His biblical commentaries are well-regarded. The roundabout island is part of the former graveyard of the churches of St Bridget and St Martin, which are not included in this listing.
