Description
The equestrian statue of Stapleton Cotton, Viscount Combermere, is a cenotaph located on Grosvenor Road in Chester, erected in 1865. Designed by Baron C Marochetti, the statue is made of bronze and stands on a granite plinth. It depicts the Viscount in field marshal's uniform on a horse that is at rest but alert, with one hoof raised.
The plinth features several inscriptions: on the south-west end, it reads "ERECTED IN HONOUR OF STAPLETON COTTON VISCOUNT COMBERMERE FIELD MARSHAL," while the north-east end states "BORN. 1773. DIED. 1865." The south-east side lists significant battles including Flanders, Lincelles, The Douro, Talavera, Torres Vedras, Busaco, Villa Garcia, Llerena, Castrajon, Ciudad Rodrigo, Elbodon, The Pyrenees, Orthes, and Toulouse. The north-west side mentions the Cape of Good Hope, Mallavelly, Seringapatam, West Indies, and Bhurtpore.
Additionally, it is noted that Thomas Gould, a soldier who fought alongside Viscount Combermere in several of these battles, is buried in the former graveyard of St Bridget's Church, which is now a grassed roundabout island located 70 meters north-east of the cenotaph.
