Description

The Thomas Gould Tombstone, located on the Grosvenor Street Roundabout, is a Grade II listed memorial dating from around 1866. It is made of sandstone and shaped like a casket lid. The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THOMAS GOULD LATE OF 52ND REGT. OF FOOT L.I. DIED IN NOVEMBER 1865 AGED 72 YEARS 46 OF WHICH WERE SPENT IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY." The stone details his participation in various military engagements, including Vimeiria, Corunna, and Waterloo, among others. He was awarded the Peninsula Medal with 13 clasps and the Waterloo Medal. The tombstone was placed over him by a few friends.
