Description

Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Union Place is a row of alley houses, likely built in the 1830s, which have been partly converted into a Catholic Club and are now used as a hostel for the homeless. The building stands three storeys high and is now divided into three bays. It features brown brick in Flemish bond on the front and English garden wall bond at the rear, with a grey slate roof. The structure has a sandstone plinth, and No. 2 includes a doorcase with plain pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Nos. 4 and 6 have plain replaced doorways with doors that have two flush panels and two replaced panels.

The windows are recessed sashes with painted stone sills. Most of the windows, except those on the third storey, have wedge lintels with cambered soffits. On the first storey, No. 2 has a 16-pane sash, No. 4 has a blank face, and No. 6 has a 12-pane sash. The second storey features two 16-pane sashes for No. 2, a 16-pane sash above the door of No. 4, and both a 12-pane and a 16-pane sash for No. 6. The third storey has shorter sashes, including three 12-pane sashes, one with 9 panes, and one with 12 panes. The rear of the building, which is partly covered, has recessed small-pane sashes. The eaves are finished with plain painted stone coping. The interiors have been altered. Nos. 2-6 Union Place, along with Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Cuppin Street, were part of the same development.
