Description

Two townhouses, later used as offices, were built in the early 19th century on cellars of medieval origin. The external facade is constructed of sandstone with a brown brick upper level in a Flemish bond pattern. A parapet obscures the roof.

The building is three storeys high with a four-window front. The sashes are recessed and have painted stone sills and wedge lintels with cambered soffits. Number 19 has a recessed panelled front door with a simple pilastered surround, hood, and moulded cornice, along with four 12-pane sashes. Number 21 has a six-panelled door with a radial bar overlight in a similar surround, and four 12-pane sashes. A sill band runs along the first storey. The second storey has four 12-pane sashes, and the third storey has four short six-pane sashes. A painted stone cornice and a one-course parapet cap the building. A central ridge chimney is present.

The cellars under both houses have narrow front cross-chambers, likely partitioned off in the early 19th century. The cross-chamber of Number 21 has a brick barrel vault. Medieval coursed rubble sandstone walling is visible in the east party wall of Number 19 and the west party wall of Number 21, as well as in the front walls of the cellars and an altered cross-wall. Number 21 has sandstone steps leading to what was a former front entrance to the cross-chamber, now blocked. The front main chamber of Number 19 features a single longitudinal oak stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops; the second room has two such beams. The ceiling structure in Number 21 has been renewed. There are brick floors, and a stone winder stair in Number 19, with a stone stair with corner winders to Number 21.

A round archway with carved consoles is located in the hall. The front room on the first storey of each house possesses an 18th-century plaster cornice. Both staircases are narrow with shaped brackets, curved strings, winders at the turns, covered steps, two stick balusters per step and a swept rail with a wreath. The second storey includes a door with four slightly bevelled panels, and a simple fireplace in a back room. The third storey retains no visible features of special interest. The windows have sub-panels and/or panelled shutters.
